Digipak Template Example


I have researched some digipaks and have decided to use a six panel one to allow more creativity when creating the parts of the digipak. When creating this I will create two CDs, one with my track list for the album and the other with extra features or a concert tour CD as many artists publish with their CDs. Above is a the net I will use of create my digipak by positioning the parts of the digipak I have created in the CD. The pack will represent my singer overall but will also represent the music video I am releasing alongside the CD as having a music video relate to the theme of an album is a convention seen in the music industry, Examples of this include Katy Perry's Teenage Dream album and her California Gurls music video. The album cover feature Katy lying in a cloud of cotton candy and this is again represented in the video through its candy theme and directly through Katy recreating the image in the video.

Problems with Filming, Day 2 (7/12/2014)

On day 2 of filming we encountered a few problems;

  • Danny not wanting to lip sync
  • Danny not knowing the songs lyrics
  • Starting late so having to finish early
How I got around these problems;
  • I reassured Danny that his singing would be muted and that I would be the only one to hear his voice. After this he was able to lip sync for me and got all the shots I needed completing.
  • Before shooting me and Will went through the song with Danny so that he was able to know only the lyrics he needed to know at the time. He had trouble with the line 'and so now I run to the things they say could' but eventually he was able to do it after we had gone through the song enough.
  • To compensate starting late I took the shots that I needed to get first and left the shots that could be shot at a later date to film later on. I ended up getting the shots I needed to get but I will have to go back and get the other shots at a later date.

Day 2 of Filming (7/12/2014)

I went to a mound near Wolfreton school to get some footage filmed. My friend Danny has a busy work scheduled so it was difficult to find a time he was able to film but luckily he has Sunday's off and we were both free to do some filming. I got the end part of the performance finished as for Christmas I am aiming to complete the last quarter of my video so I started with these shots. Also for this set of shooting my friend Will came down to assist me by holding the storyboard sheets and playing the lyrics for Danny to mime to.

For these shots I had originally want to bring a microphone and microphone stand. However, I did not have access to a microphone stand and could not find one so I was unable to do this. For the microphone I used a Singstar microphone but had Danny hold his hand over the Singstar strip in order to make it look more realistic.

I faced a problem with shooting in that Danny was unsure about miming originally. However, after I reassured him that his singing would be muted and that I would be the only one to hear them he was willing to sing. I am very grateful for this as it will make lining up the song easier. Another problem I encountered was that Danny was struggling to remember the lyrics to the song. I had sent Danny the song over FaceBook but he didn't have enough time to listen to and learn the song.However, we were able to get passed this by going through the song lyrics immediately before we started filming meaning he only had a few worlds to remember at once.

Overall I believe this was a successful day of filming even if due to the late start I wasn't able to get all the shots I wanted to get on the day. However, I managed to get all the shots I needed and the other shots can be taken at a later date.

Day 2 Shooting Plan (7/12/2014)

On this day I plan to be taking shots; 3,4,5,10,11,12,13,22,23,24,31,32,35,36,45,46,59,61,62,63,76,77,81,82,83,89,94,96

I have planned to do some shooting for my music video on Sunday 7th December at a mound near Wolfreton secondary school for the performance aspect of my video. On this day I hope to complete all my performance filming with my actor Danny. To do this we will need to meet quite early as I need to shots to be taken during daylight and because it gets dark early around this time I need to shoot as early as possible. I have asked Danny to wear a pair of jeans and a plain t-shirt for my filming as that is the costume I have specified as my performer wearing. He has said he has both of these costumes so it should be no problem on the day,

For shooting this I will need to borrow a tripod from college as I don't have access to my own. I will also be borrowing a camera because of the fact that my camera ran out of battery while I was filming with Sarah during Day 1 of shooting and now knowing that I need a back up in case this happens again. I will also be looking to borrow a microphone and microphone stand from college but if I cannot get access to these for any reason I will find a substitute or remove the items from my video entirely. Even though I believe these would look good in my video, I don't believe removing them would cause much of an impact.

To organize for shooting I text Danny to find out when he would be free to film. I know he has a busy schedule at work so this was important for me to do so I could arrange my filming only on days he would be able to do.

Problems with Filming, Day 1 (4/12/2014)

On day 1 of filming we encountered a few problems;

  • Sarah originally feeling uncomfortable with the filming I had asked her to do
  • The camera I had planned to film with running out of battery
How I got around these problems;
  • I reassured Sarah that the video would only be viewed by me, my teachers and the examiners which provided a comfort to Sarah. Eventually she found that she enjoyed the shooting process and is looking forward to continuing to make the video.
  • After encountering this problem I originally tried to borrow a camera from college but the camera guy, Ben, had left for the day and I was unable to do this because of this. I then asked Lewis Stewart if I could borrow his camera and he was kind enough to allow me to borrow it for this set of shooting.

Day 1 of Filming (4/12/2014)

Today I stayed at college after it had finished to do some filming with my friend Sarah who doesn't go to Wyke so she would not have been able to do some filming during the college day. The parts of the video I completed where the shots of Sarah showing various emotions behind a white screen in the green room.

Before we began shooting I needed to choose a jumper for Sarah to wear in the piece as I wanted one that felt right for my artist to wear. For this I had brought one of my own jumpers in an Sarah had brought three of hers. In the end I chose to use a cream jumper Sarah had brought as I believed it best represented what I wanted for my protagonist. Also before shooting Sarah expressed some awkwardness about having to show the emotions on camera because of the amount of facial expressions she would have to show when doing these. However, eventually she felt more comfortable after having done a couple of shots and she was able to do all the shots I needed her to do.

Before filming I faced some problems as the camera I brought ran out of battery despite the fact I had charged it over night. I have deduced that the problem was most likely caused by the battery being quiet old meaning I will most likely have to replace it to continue on using my own camera. For this reason I had to find a camera that I could use instead of my own. Originally I was going to borrow one from college but by the time I found out my own camera was not going to work Ben, the camera guy, had gone home so that was not an option. In the end I was able to borrow a camera off Lewis Stewart and used this to film.

Overall despite all the issues I was able to get all the filming I needed to get in the green room and looking back at my shots I believe they have turned out successfully. I originally intended to also shoot the shots in the classroom today but this has had to be pushed back to a later date because of all the issues I faced while trying to film today. For this reason I may need to change my location for filming these shots as my college is a hard place for Sarah to get to and it would be easier for her if I changed my shooting location.

Test Shots

I decided to test my skills with the camera has it had been a while since I had filmed anything that needed to be created into a final product. To do this I took my camera, which is a Panasonic DMC-FZ8 and filmed a few test shots, including a Pan, Tilt, Still Shot and Zoom. Looking at these shots I am mostly satisfied with my skill with the camera. However, I am not happy with how the zoom turned out as I find it's too fuzzy and does not represent my overall skill level. If I use a zoom in my final product I will make sure to not zoom in as fast as I did in this test shot to make sure it turned out better than it did in this test shot.

Day 1 Shooting Plan (4/12/2014)

On this day I plan to be taking shots; 47,48,49,50,51,52,53,54,55,56,57,58,68,69,70,71,72,73,74,75

I have planned to do some shooting for my music video on Thursday, 4th December at Wyke College with my protagonist played by Sarah Baynes. As Sarah does not come to Wyke we have had to plan shooting around her college scheduled as well as mine. For this reason we will be shooting after college has finished at 4 so that we have more time to shoot. I have also asked her to wear a chunky jumper or cardigan for the day but she doesn't think she has one so I will be providing one for her.

For this shooting I will need to borrow a tripod from college as I do not have personal access to these pieces of equipment. I will be using my own camera (a Panasonic DMC-FZ8) for filming and will use two SD cards of my own (one 2GB one and a 4GB one) as I know there is a risk that one of them could get full during the process of filming.

For this shoot I had to organize when my actress would be available to film because we both have busy college schedules and I wanted to know she would be free to film on the 4th of December 2014. To do this I text her a few days before I wanted to film so that I knew I would be okay to organize my filming for this day. By doing this I now have the reassurance of knowing that I will be okay to film on this day and have made sure to find out whether my parents would be available to pick me and Sarah up after the shoot as we both live quiet far from the college and it would take some time to walk.

Location 1

My first location is the mound close to Wolfreton school where all of my performance will take place.
I chose this location as I originally wanted to have my artist stood atop a hill or something high off the ground but found that would be hard to find and organise my actor around going to this place so instead decided to use this mound as it is close to my house and easy to get to. Here he will have to preform the song which could cause me issues due to the fact that the mound is close to some houses and there will most likely be people around while we are shooting. However, I believe my actor will be able to be professional while shooting and will lip sync what I need him to.

Location 2

The second location I am using for my music video is my sisters bedroom at my house.
I have chosen to use this room as my protagonist is female so I needed to feature a room that is convincingly decorated by a female, something only this room could do. I also chose it because of the location of the bed and the size of the room. The bed being in the corner of the room will make filming many of my shots easier as well as the size of the room allowing me to shoot from further back giving me more room for shot lengths to work with. Here my actress will wake up and start drinking after the death of her father. She will also have a note by him in this scene so I will need to provide that.
She will later come back to this room and begin to trash it after her pain becomes too much to deal with.

Location 3

My third location is one of the classrooms at college.
I chose to use this location as I decided to include a scene where my actress finds out she failed a test and a classroom is the most believable location for this to occur. Here my actress will find out she's failed the test and then have her first 'freak out' before the conclusion of the video. I will need to provide a test paper for this part as well as an alcohol bottle as I plan to have one placed in her bag in this scene.

Location 4

The next location I will feature is a street that is near my college.
I chose to use this location as it would make it easier to film with my actress during college hours so deciding to film at a place close to college will allow me to do this. In this scene my actress will be confronted by one of her friends who is trying to help her after noticing her going down hill after the death of her father. My actress will reject her friends help and walk away from her without feeling any better.
